Our Team’s Journey to Thailand’s Sapphire Mines

Every year, Angie and the EJS team would go on an educational trip and invite the EJS students to join us. In 2022, we embarked on an unforgettable journey to the heart of sapphire country—Chanthaburi, Thailand.

Known for its rich deposits of gemstones, particularly sapphires, this trip was a perfect blend of adventure, learning, and inspiration. From the depths of the mining site to the brilliance of the World Sapphire Gallery, we witnessed firsthand the incredible process that transforms raw stones into the stunning jewels we all adore. The Journey Begins – Exploring the Mining Site in Chanthaburi

As our team touched down in Chanthaburi, the excitement among the team and professional students was palpable. Our guide brought us to a large field, surrounded by the lush greenery and serene landscape – it set the perfect backdrop for our gem-filled adventure. This was the beginning of a journey into the heart of Thailand’s sapphire trade, where tradition meets modern craftsmanship.

Deep in the Chanthaburi countryside, we arrived at the sapphire mining site where we watched the local miners at work. We were amazed by the intricate and labor-intensive process of extracting these precious stones from the earth.

It was a humbling experience, seeing firsthand the raw beauty of sapphires in their natural state and the efforts -and a sharp eye- needed to seek out these gemstones among the gravel.

Sifting Through the Earth – The Mining Process

The process of mining sapphires is as fascinating as it is challenging. Our team had the chance to observe how the earth is carefully sifted to reveal the hidden gems within. We even had the chance to try our luck -testing how sharp our eyes are- and pick out some stones that may be gemstones. We truly had a newfound admiration and understanding towards the labourers hard at work and the dedication and skill of these miners were truly impressive and inspiring.

Sorting the Sapphires – Attention to Detail

Sifting through and cleaning the dirt off the gems they found is the first step of the process. Next stop, we went to a factory where we see how they sort through the sapphires collected. 

It goes without saying how a keen eye is required when working with gemstones, and an intimate knowledge of the stone’s characteristics. We watched as these experts classified each stone by its color, clarity, and size, ensuring only the finest sapphires move on to the next stage of polishing and cutting. The Art of Polishing – Crafting Perfection

In this gem factory, we observed the delicate art of transforming raw sapphires into dazzling gems. The artisans worked with extreme precision, using traditional techniques and tools (as seen in the videos^) to further enhance each sapphire’s natural shining beauty, bringing out their brilliance.

World Sapphire Gallery – A Display of Masterpieces

Our journey culminated at the World Sapphire Gallery, where our eyes were treated to a breathtaking display of sapphire gemstones and jewellery. From rare, vibrant stones to intricate, high-end jewellery pieces, the gallery showcased the unmatched allure of sapphires in all their glory.

A tourguide shared everything about Sapphires, from its quality to its deep and rich history; reflecting the deep cultural heritage and artistic excellence of Chanthaburi’s gemstone industry.

A Lasting Impression – Our Takeaways

As we wrapped up our visit, we reflected on the incredible journey we experienced. From the depths of the earth to the polished gems in the gallery, our trip to Chanthaburi was a vivid reminder of the beauty and value of these gems. Our visit to Chanthaburi was more than just a company trip—it was a deep dive into the world of sapphires that has enriched our appreciation for these stunning gemstones.
