Meet our dear Sumi who loves jewellery and has always wanted to learn the skills to create her own masterpieces. Shas been with EJS since the early days and is also one of Angie’s first few students that signed up in 2013. She then soon turned professional not long after. In her 11 year journey with us, she has since completed both Professional Fashion Jewellery Design Level 1 and 2 courses in 2018.
So, it’s about time for us -like a proud parent sticking up their child’s artwork on the fridge- we would like to showcase her original designs and highlight her inspirations behind her graduation pieces.
The inspiration behind this piece was to resemble DNA and something like a Daisy Chain. “The intention was to create something whimsical that also links back to the idea of how we are the unique make-up of all our past ancestors’ DNA.”
Sumi also told us how she liked that it was done very organically; that it isn’t a pattern that can be repeated or standardized so it is -much like a DNA strand, uniquely hers. A perfecct example of what it means to just let loose and enjoy the process; staying present in the moment and not stressing on the outcome of it.
For her level 2 Grad piece design, she told us how she was just playing around and letting the ideas flow naturally to see what its outcome will be.
She incorporated her love for shapes which “…gives one a sense of leaving the noise of the outside and going deep within…” -she liked the idea of organic shapes such as triangles, squares, and the concentric circles which she created including a sort of medallion effect with the middle bit hanging in the centre of the shapes to create a strong focal point.
The colours red and blue are based on the idea of Yin and Yang – the red symbolizes the feminine and the blue symbolizes the masculine. This can also be seen in the shapes, whereby the masculine is represented in the sharper triangles and squares while the Yin energy is represented in the circlular swirl shapes.
Similarly, the idea of concentric circles was also inspired from when she visited the labybrinth maze in Glastonbury, UK. Its shape brings a sense of healing which can help to ground oneself.
